The Builders went south to Georgetown, Delaware, to what we thought would
be a nice sunny weekend. When we arrive that was not to be the case. As we
started game one the rains began, difficult weather to play in, let alone pitch in.
The tone was set for the weekend by starting pitcher, Tom Broyles, who battled
a tough Jackson team. Mike DeRenzi came in and did a fine job in relief,
but the Builders couldn’t get anything going on offence and the game ended in a 2-0 loss.
As if we thought things couldn’t get worse, the weather continued to
rain as we moved to the next field to play the Bergen Swamp Rats. The weather
started to lift, and so did the bats of the Builders, with an 11-1 onslaught. The
Builders really did an excellent job offensively and Jacob Nappi did a stellar
job on the hill. So we left the field 1-1, wet and cold, but we soon found
ourselves to be the third seed. Playing the early game on Sunday, the Builders
had some work to do. The day started out as pure magic as Jacob Tannen
pitched a perfect game in game 1 against the West Hazelton Wolfpack. The
Builders won 3-0 and would now face undefeated South Jersey Thrashers.
Both teams played solid defense, but the Builders came out on top with
an amazing pitching performance by Mike Bolton. The Builders gave up an early
run and found themselves to be behind 1-0 till the bottom of the 6th when
lightning struck. Rob Nannis’ 3 run homer left the Thrashers shocked and
Bolton closed out the seventh as the Builders went on to win 3-1. Off to the
finals to face another undefeated team. The Builders regrouped and played
another solid game against the Jackson team they lost to the previous day,
getting two runs in the first off MVP Nick Montefusco’s triple.
Nick took the hill and the Builders never looked back. We went on to score 5
more runs including Phil Saglietto, who had a 100% on-base percentage for the
weekend. The weekend was a top to bottom team effort from stellar defense of
Antony Asta, and Aiden Favia, to multiple double plays and clutch hitting from
Lukas DeRenzi, Mike Bolton, and Tom Broyles, all rounded out with 21 innings
behind the plate by catcher Joe Spernal. This weekend shows the potential of
this talented team and will make the rest of fall season something exciting.
Thanks for the parents support in tough conditions. Go Farrah!
